Solar Cell Efficiency Only 1% of the light landing on the first solar cell was turned into electricity. The first commercial solar panels in the 1950s improved this to 6%, but continued development has pushed the efficiency of modern devices to nearly 20%. Researchers are now working with novel materials having efficiencies above 25%.
